Lunch seminar with Professor Bo Feng - Supportive Communication in the Age of AI
A very topical subject and of interest to teaching staff as well as research staff, do not miss this chance to hear more of her work and the role of AI in current society.
Abstract:
How do people seek and provide support when both humans and machines join the conversation? This talk highlights my research program on supportive communication, from cross-cultural advice and online communities to current studies of human–AI interaction. I will share findings from three current projects: a comparison of human and ChatGPT responses to support seekers, a communication-centered framework for understanding AI sycophancy (the tendency of AI to uncritically agree with users), and an analysis of self-disclosure in human–Replika interactions. Together, these studies suggest that AI systems can appear attentive yet miss relational nuance, reinforce bias through alignment, and create relational asymmetries even as users treat them as companions.

Everyone is welcome to attend but I particularly encourage all PhD students and junior scholars to meet this international scholar and to get to know her work.
Welcome all, and please bring your lunch for the seminar!
