Programme Summary

The symposium will begin with morning registration, fika and networking activities, followed by an introduction from the organisers.

The Present: Questions of Politics and Policy

The morning programme will explore contemporary political, legal and policy-related challenges affecting animals and animal advocacy in the Nordic and Baltic contexts. Presentations will address topics such as the EU milk subsidy and the legal status of animals, followed by a regional panel discussion featuring representatives from leading animal advocacy organisations in the Nordic and Baltic regions. The session will focus on defending animal interests in changing political climates and strengthening cross-border dialogue.

The Future: Animals, Science and the Environment

The afternoon programme will turn towards future-oriented questions concerning animals, scientific research and environmental harms. Presentations will examine issues related to animals in laboratories and green criminology, alongside discussions on building a Nordic-Baltic Animal (Studies) Network. The day will conclude with an interactive workshop focused on strategic approaches to animal rights activism and future collaboration.
Throughout the day, participants will have opportunities for networking, informal exchange and collective reflection across academic and civil society perspectives.

A detailed programme will be shared with registered participants closer to the event.
