Nordic-Baltic Symposium on Animal Studies to Convene at Lund University
Scholars, practitioners and activists from across the Nordic and Baltic regions will gather at Lund University on 16 October 2026 for the Nordic-Baltic Symposium on Animal Studies: Present Challenges and Future Endeavours. Organised by Rama Alshoufani and Tobias Linné of the Department of Communication, the symposium aims to advance dialogue on the political, social, ethical and environmental dimensions of human-animal relations.
Despite growing awareness, animal-related issues remain underrepresented in both academic and public discourse. This symposium seeks to address that gap by providing a regional platform for transdisciplinary exchange and collaboration, strengthening links between research, practice and advocacy.
The programme is structured around two core themes. The morning session, The Present: Questions of Politics and Policy, will explore current challenges in animal governance and advocacy, including a panel discussion on safeguarding animal interests in shifting political landscapes. The afternoon session, The Future: Animals, Science and the Environment, will focus on emerging issues in animal rights, scientific research and environmental harms, concluding with a practical workshop.
The event is open to the public and will be of particular interest to researchers, students, educators, activists and representatives from animal advocacy organisations.
The symposium also aims to lay the groundwork for a long-term Nordic–Baltic research and education network in Critical Animal Studies, fostering sustained regional collaboration. Expected outcomes include a publicly available summary report outlining key discussions, shared research priorities and future initiatives.
Hosted by the Department of Communication and the Lund University Critical Animal Studies Institute (LUCASI), the symposium builds on a strong institutional foundation to support meaningful and lasting engagement with animal-related issues.
