Security, Intelligence, and Psychological Defence

The security, intelligence, and psychological defence theme covers research on the role of communication within broad questions relating to national security and foreign interference. On the one hand, this covers themes such as information warfare, disinformation, and cognitive security. On the other, it covers methods for computational analysis, open-source intelligence, and for supporting resilience-building within democratic societies.

As recent debates on foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI), hybrid warfare, and cybersecurity demonstrate, information and cognition represent significant domains of competition complementing the traditional foci of national security concerns. Researchers at the Department of Communication approach these questions in different ways, in conjunction with the Lund University Centre for Preparedness and Resilience (LUPREP).

The Psychological Defence Research Institute is a major long-term research platform dedicated to the theory and practice of psychological defence. It is financed by the Swedish Psychological Defence Agency, EU Horizon, other national and international agencies, and through commissioned research and education.
