How to find an internship in Sweden

The semester was wrapped up with a guest lecture by Peter Mayerhofer, Client Relationship Manager at Jobbsprånget, a non-profit organisation that matches foreign-born academics with employers. 

Many international students studying in Sweden seek internships to gain work experience, access new opportunities, and build a professional network. Since navigating this process can be challenging, Peter offered valuable tips and tricks during the session to support students in their search. Two of the interns on the programme, Rini Nair and Maria Teresa Gabriel, both from India, also shared their experiences and insights from their career journeys in Sweden.

Visit IKEA: How to apply for jobs in Sweden

A group of 60 students visited Sockerbruket, a multifunctional hub housed in a former sugar-processing factory and a historic Helsingborg landmark, transformed into a modern, and flexible workspace that houses IKEA IT.
Tomas Bolander, Multifunctional Hub Manager at Ingka Services AB, led the students through an overview of IKEA’s corporate structure, global reach, working methods, vision, and values. He highlighted the company’s central mission: "to create a better everyday life for the many people," a principle that permeates every aspect of its operations, including its approach to employee well-being. Tomas also emphasised the importance of the workplace as a space for socialising, collaborating, and connecting, where "togetherness" is a key value. Later on, Kristofer Rönström, Talent Sourcing Specialist at IKEA Retail Sweden, shared valuable insights on the recruitment process and provided guidance on how to apply for jobs in Sweden.

A group of 40 students visited Nederman, an environmental technology company, headquartered in Helsingborg with 2500 employees in 25 countries. The event was hosted by Eva Carin Svensson, Senior Vice President of Human Resources, Ing-Marie Frithiof, Group Learning & Development Manager and Anton Gunnarsson, HR Coordinator, who gave the students unique insights into Swedish corporate culture and how to work with corporate values in a global company.

Understanding the Swedish labour market

Before a crowded auditorium in Mindpark, our first guest speaker Miguel Salvador, Adviser for EURES (European Employment Services) and Arbetsförmedlingen (Swedish Public Employment Service), gave the students an overview of the labour market, practical suggestions on where and how to apply for jobs, and helpful information about employment insurance, unions, and standard working hours. Following that, Hussain Currimbhoy, director, filmmaker, and founder of Gåsebäck Film Festival shared his inspiring journey as a Canadian citizen working in many countries and now living in Sweden.
